1.What is Merchant Navy?
Merchant Navy is a Global Industry Centrally Controlled & Monitored
by IMO Conventions. There after each Country has its own controlling
authority e.g. D.G. Shipping India. The Merchant Navy is a non-combatant
commercial fleet, which deals with transporting cargo and occasionally,
passengers, by sea. Its fleet is therefore composed of passenger
vessels, cargo liners, tankers, carriers, as well as other special types
of vehicles. A career in this field is full of adventure and long
voyages to exotic places. Trained people are required for the three main
departments of the ship the deck, the engine and the service
department. There are, thus, many career options that are available for
any youngster that has dreams to join the merchant navy.

4.How is Merchant Navy better than any other career option?
After 12th if you want a job by which you can earn handsome money then at lest you have to spend 3 years but in Merchant navy if you will spend 1 year then you will start earning after 1 year as your onboard training will start with your stipend. You will become independent in very young age. In shipping sector there is a huge demand of man power by which promotional opportunity is very high. In just at the age of 21 you will start earning in Lakhs which might be very tough in other sector.
5.Who is the governing body of Merchant Navy?
Directorate General of Shipping is the governing body of Merchant Navy who deals with implementation of shipping policy and legislation so as to ensure the safety of life and ships at sea, prevention of marine pollution, promotion of maritime education and training in co-ordination with the International Maritime Organization, regulation of employment and welfare of seamen, development of coastal shipping, augmentation of shipping tonnage, examination and certification of Merchant Navy Officers, Supervision and Control of the allied offices under its administrative jurisdiction.
6.What is CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate)?
C.D.C means a Continuous Discharge Certificate-cum-Seafarer's Identity Document. This document certifies that the person holding this is a seaman as per The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, as amended 1995. Every seafarer must carry this document while on board, which is also an official and legal record of his sea experience.
7.Why pre sea training is required?
Pre sea training is essential for obtaining CDC. According to the D.G. Shipping rules, the eligibility conditions for applicant seaman other than Certificated Officers -
- An applicant for issue of CDC as Deck, Engine and Catering (Saloon) Trainee shall have successfully completed the pre-sea training for ratings from an approved training institute as prescribed under sub-clause (b) of clause (ii) of sub-rule (2) of rule 28 of the Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarer's) Rules, 1998.
- An applicant for issue of CDC shall have undergone the basic familiarization training and instructions as prescribed under sub-rule (1) of rule 33 of the Merchant Shipping (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarer's) Rules, 1998.
- In case of issue of CDC on compassionate grounds, the Director General of shipping may relax any or all of the provisions of this rule except sub-rules (5) and (6) of this rule in respect of all categories.

latest needs and demands of workface. And hence IMU was born. IMU conducts Common Entrance Test (CET) to take candidates for various courses.

Eligibility Criteria
Following
are the eligibility criteria:

DNS - 1 Year A)
60% (PCM) and 50% (English) in 12th class
B) B.Sc (Any of these
Physics/ Mathematics/ Chemistry/
Electronics) passed candidates
with 55 % marks.
C)
B.tech candidates with 50 % in English.
2) B.Sc- 3 years-
60% (PCM) and 50% (English) in 12th Class. For B.Sc in Ship Building and Repair
only 50% in PCM.
3) B Tech Marine
Engineering/Naval Architecture
-
60%(PCM) and 50% (English) in 12th Class. 2nd Year lateral entry candidates
should have pursued Marine or Mechanical or Naval Architecture or Electrical in
diploma.
Operating
a modern ship efficiently requires specialised knowledge. A seafarer thus needs
to undergo training to operate and manage a ship. The two main departments of
operating a ship are:

Deck or
Navigation: Deck officers are responsible for the navigation of the ship and
delivery of the cargo at the port of destination as per the time schedule. The
department also looks after the general maintenance, administration, observance
of national and international maritime laws and discipline on board.

Engine:
With a basic qualification of engineering, the officers from the Engine
Department are responsible for the efficient running and maintenance of the
main engines and other equipments to enable the ship to sail as per the
schedule.

Applicants are required to qualify the written exam held at different
locations all over India by Shipping Companies.
Psychometric Test
Conducted by the certified psychologist/Sponsoring
Company to determine the mental profile of the candidate to determine the
suitability of the candidate for the profession
Personal Interview
Applicants are interviewed by a panel of educators and maritime professionals to assess the applicants' communication skills, leadership potential, clarity of thought, maturity and reasoning abilities. The panel also looks for any extracurricular achievements of the candidate.

Medical Examination
Medical practitioners appointed by the Institute will examine all selected candidates for certifying conformation with the medical requirements laid down by the Institute.
An eye test by MMD, DG Shipping will be undertaken for the candidates who are successful in all other tests and then shortlisted.

You will join merchant navy in following two ways-
1. Sponsored Candidate.
2.Non-Sponsored Candidate

Sponsored Candidate -If you want to get sponsored,you have to approach different employing shipping companies or their authorized agents registered by DGS for sponsorship.You can get info about them from advertisements or search for them online.They often have their own demands like higher percentage in HSC or English or both.They will conduct a separate exam of yours in order to check weather you are eligible to get their sponsorship or not,followed by an interview,either telephonic or face to face or both.Depends upon the company.When you clear all the stages,you are all set to be a sponsored candidate.
But APPEARING IN CET CONDUCTED BY IMU IS COMPULSORY.
And both sponsored and Non sponsored candidates are required to successfully clear the IMU CET.
Non-Sponsored candidates-All non sponsored candidates will have to undergo IMU CET and then on the basis of their rank,they are likely to get the sponsorship.However,some companies may not consider ranks only for selection,they will select as per their need.
Entrance Exam - You can join merchant navy by appearing in CET (Common Entrance Test) conducted by IMU (Indian Maritime University) twice a year.
One for February batch and other for August batch.The exam for February batch is generally held in December and for August batch it is held in the month of June.
12Th appearing students should appear in June for August session.After you clear the exam,you would be called for counselling to Chennai.And your college would be allotted to you on the basis of merit.
Training - You have to undergo compulsory residential training as per the rules of DG shipping,day schooling is not allowed.Your course duration will vary as per your course.

B.sc- 3 Years
DNS- 1 Year at college and 2 Years of on- board training.After completing your training period,you will be allowed to go join a foreign going ship and you would be called as MERCHANT NAVY OFFICER.
Note- The lower age limit is 17 years. Upper age limit is 25 years which isrelaxed by 2 years for female candidates and 5 years for SC/ST. You need to clear the interview in order to get a job. Please be very careful when approaching any company for sponsorship,check their registration with DGS.Do the
same in case of agents. Please get your eye sight checked before going to counselling. You should have good command over English language,both spoken and written.Make sure you prepare well for this. DGS refers to Directorate General Of Shipping.It is a government body which moderates shipping department.
How to Join :
Candidates must be 10+2 PCM in addition he/she must meet requirement and clear one of the following entrance test .
