The Indian Maritime University (IMU) was established on 14th November 2008 as a teaching and affiliating university under the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, with Chennai as headquarters. It was set up to promote maritime studies, training, research and extension with focus on emerging areas like oceanography, maritime history, maritime laws, maritime security, search and rescue, transportation of dangerous cargo, environmental studies and other related fields, and to achieve excellence in these areas.

There were 6 renowned legacy teaching-cum-research institutes under the Ministry of Shipping, and these were subsumed under the Indian Maritime University in November 2008.
The 3 institutes in Mumbai, namely, the Training Ship Chanakya (T S CHANAKYA), the Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research (LBS COLLEGE), and the Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI) became the Mumbai campus of the Indian Maritime University.
The 2 institutes in Kolkata, namely, the Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI, KOLKATA) and the Indian Institute of Port Management (IIPM) became the Kolkata campus of the University. The National Ship Design and Research Centre (NSDRC) in Visakhapatnam and the National Maritime Academy in Chennai became the Visakhapatnam and Chennai campuses respectively of the University.
Post-November 2008, 3 new Campuses were set up - in Kochi in 2009, Kandla in 2011 and Karaikal in 2014. The University also has 36 Affiliated Institutes

MERCHANT NAVY CAREER & MERCHANT NAVY ENTRANCE EXAM - 2015

MERCHANT NAVY CAREER & MERCHANT NAVY ENTRANCE EXAM - 2015

MERCHANT NAVY CAREER & MERCHANT NAVY ENTRANCE EXAM - 2015

AN international trade, shipping  offers fascinating career as seafarers (those who earn their living by service at sea). The  profession is widely described as challenging, adventurous and highly paid.

About 90 per cent of the global goods transportation takes place through sea routes by purpose-built merchant vessels.

“The total number of ships across the world is about 50,500. India has got a total of 35,000 officers and 110,000 seafarers while the world shipping needs around 466,000 officers and 721,000 seafarers. At the start of the year, there was a shortage of around 10,000 officers globally. India accounts for around 5 per cent of world manning,” says an expert in an industry magazine’s recent issue.

Diverse Opportunities

In modern day shipping, the sector involves ocean management, ports, logistics, shipbuilding, supply chain management, personnel recruitment and ship-management.

Job profiles: There are basically three streams of employment On board a ship – deck officers, engineers and ratings. Deck officers have the responsibility of navigation, safe and efficient movement of the ship and cargo.

Engineers are primarily needed to look after the engine, which in case of a ship is not only gigantic but also complicated. Ratings are such staff on board a ship who offer physical help in carrying out various functions. Typically, each of these three departments has well organized hierarchy. Deck officers are headed by the Master, also called Captain.
Similarly, the engine department is headed by the Chief Engineer and the ratings are headed by a Boatswain. A Master or a Chief Engineer is assisted by many junior colleagues, who have the same basic qualification but not the same sea-experience and certificates of competency as the Master or a Chief Engineer. And in order to gain the sea-experience and different competency certificates, they need to not only find and continue with the sea job but also take the post-sea competency examinations from time to time to facilitate their promotions.

The demand-supply mismatch in the manning sector has led to faster promotions and a fresh graduate in nautical science or marine engineering can  expect to rise to the top-most level in the official hierarchy in about six years.

The day at sea is divided into six four-hour periods. Three group of watch standers are on duty for four hours and then off for eight hours. Seamen often work overtime during their off time.

The following programmes are offered by the Indian Maritime University at is campuses and affiliated:

How to become a Marine Engineer after doing Mechanical Engineering?

If you are a Mechanical Engineer and wish to get a job in the Merchant Navy, then you can do so by becoming a marine engineer using your mechanical engineering degree.

Mechanical and Marine engineering courses have several subjects in common and this makes it easier for a mechanical engineer to get an additional degree in marine and open new doors of opportunities.
Moreover, with the present shortage of maritime professionals in the shipping industry and lack of quality mechanical engineering jobs in the market, taking up marine engineering is an ideal choice for those already having a degree in mechanical engineering.

How to Become a Marine Engineer?
The best part of pursuing a marine engineering degree after mechanical engineering is that you don’t have to go through the four years of rigorous engineering training, which a marine engineer  (Graduate Marine Engineering GME)  has to go through. All you need is a one year specialized course.

     ENGINE OFFICERS DEPARTMENT

Engine officer

Engine officers mainly deal with the maintenance of various kinds of machineries found on board ships. There is a long list of such machineries and they include the main engine or the main propulsion plant, the auxiliary power generators, boilers, pumps, inert gas systems and so forth. Needless to say when a ship is built these machineries are fitted at that time in the ship building yard but since a ship is almost continuously on the move these machineries require constant preventive as well as breakdown maintenance in order to keep those machineries in proper operational condition. The ultimate goal of the Engine officer is to become Chief Engineer of his/her own ship.

B. Tech Marine Engineering - 4 years

The curriculum for the 4-year B. Tech Marine Engineering Course includes the requirement of STCW Convention of IMO and that of the Directorate General of Shipping, Govt. of India for competencies required for Engineer Officer in Charge of a watch.
The B. Tech Marine Engineering Degree Course is a 4-year fully residential course comprising of 8 semesters and includes training on Ship-in-Campus during the seventh semester. On successful completion of the term end examinations conducted by the Indian Maritime University, a Degree Certificate is awarded.
